The historic stone bridge of Kameni Most spans the river Vardar and unites two city districts and also the Muslim world with that of the Christian Orthodox. The massive two hundred and fourteen metre long stone bridge was built in the late fifteenth century under the rule of Sultan Mehmet the Second. In Ottoman times the bridge was a place of execution where rebels were executed in public. Skopje has become a symbol of fraternity and solidarity. A prospering city at the south-eastern end of the world!

http://www.aswetravel.com/its-in-the-little-things-skopje-macedonia/ Skopje Macedonia. Europe We’ve just taken an overnight train from Belgrade down to Macedonia, and we’re going to get off in Skopje soon. Well I don’t know how long till we’re there. We should be there about an hour ago. But like usual down here, trains are always a few hours late leaving and arriving. I had a good sleep though. We got a smaller compartment this time. Last time we had sick people in the room. We’ve only got two this time so it’s perfect. I actually slept pretty good. So we left our backpacks back at the hostel, and it’s still pretty early so we’re going to start exploring the city today. When most backpackers or tourists come to Macedonia, they don’t see Skopje as a final destination. Most of them come here, the first thing they want to do is leave. We haven’t heard that many good reviews about the city as a city, but we decided to stay here. We decided to stay here, explore and see what Skopje has to offer. We’re walking over the stone bridge here, it’s one of the few attractions here in Skopje. And just looking over the bridge, you can see there’s a lot of construction work going on, from a building over there, there’s some sort of fountain down there, and over there. And it seems to me that Skopje’s a bit sick of people coming and leaving straight away, and they seem to be recreating the main city area here by adding new buildings, attractions like this. So it could be nice to come back in six months to see what they actually created here in the center of town. This is a part of Skopje that we had heard about, Carsija. It’s the old part of town. It’s also one of the best preserved examples of urban Ottoman architecture. There’s also a bazaar around the corner, so we’re going to go and check that out now. This is a really bustling market, and it has been for centuries. This used to be the meeting point where Muslims and Christian people, who used to live in separate parts of the city, came to do their shopping. During the Europe Train Challenge, it’s been our mission to taste a local dish in every single country. During the last four countries, it’s been very hard to find something which is unique to each country. Yeah, they all seem very influenced by the Turkish cuisine. Here we have a plate of baklava and other Turkish pastries. They’re really good, and they’re all drenched in some sticky syrup. They are sticky. Tastes pretty good though. This is a really cute part of town. We’re going to check out the fortress now, the Kale Fortress. Seems pretty cool. Like we said before, in Skopje, there are not many tourist attractions, things to go and see. They do have this one thing though, it’s called the Kale Fortress. It’s an incredible fortress on top of a hill overlooking Skopje. And we just tried to get in, and apparently we’re not allowed. This is an amazing site though, people would love to come and see because they found, a few years ago, they found remnants of people living here over 3,000 years before Christ. So it really is a place that would gain a lot of tourists. I find that kind of funny you know, you don’t have that much going for you, everyone knows about it, so the stuff that you do have You close. That’s not exactly good tourism. I really enjoyed the Old Town and the cafés around there. It’s too bad the fortress was closed. But there’s one thing that Skopje can be really proud of, and that is the fact that Mother Theresa was born here, so I think this is an important place to visit. Tomorrow we’re off to Greece, Thessaloniki, so I’ll see you there.

The mediaeval frescos on the walls and ceilings are well preserved after five centuries. Southwest of Prilep is the ancient city of Stibera that is also known as Macedonian Pompeii. It is in a good location on an important road. The last Macedonian king, Perseus, had his military headquarters in Stibera during his struggles with Rome. In the south, just a few kilometres from the Greek border, is Bitola, at the foot of Pelister Mountain and on the edge of the fertile Pelagonija Plains. Buildings with Neo-Baroque and Renaissance facades, huge mosques and splendid diplomatic residences indicate the city’s importance. Macedonia is a wild land full of natural splendour and with a long and dramatic history that is well worth more than just a flying visit. Indeed, this visit also features a Galička wedding that is a fine example of colourful tradition and local culture.

Top best things to visit in Skopje! Skopje is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Macedonia. It is the country’s political, cultural, economic, and academic center. Skopje is known as the City of Statues thanks to its impressive monuments situated all over the city. In the center of town is the Macedonia Square, the biggest public space in Macedonia. In its middle stands the Warrior on a Horse, a fountain and a statue of Alexander the Great. The symbol of the city the Stone Bridge connects Macedonia Square to the Old Bazaar. Around the square, which serves as a main entrance to the Old Bazaar, are: The Museum of the Macedonian Struggle, The National Theater, And the Holocaust Memorial, a museum and multimedia center about the history of the Jews in the Balkans. Nearby is another representative square with the Macedonian Opera and Ballet and a Philharmonic Hall. And next to it is the Art Bridge, the most beautiful bridge in the city full of sculptures of noted artists. Also worth a visit are: The Porta Macedonia, a triumphal arch dedicated to 20 years of Macedonian independence. The Mother Teresa House, a beautiful and tranquil modern chapel and a museum. And the Church of St Clement of Ohrid, the largest cathedral of the Macedonian Orthodox Church. One of the most important places to go in Skopje is the Old Bazaar. It is the largest marketplace in the Balkans famous for its cultural and historical values. Beside the stores there are some interesting objects within the Old Bazaar, such as: The National Museum, one of the oldest museums in the country. The Double Hamam, a Turkish bath, today used as a gallery. The Church of the Ascension of Jesus, a tiny orthodox temple with a pleasant courtyard. And the Mustafa Pasha Mosque, one of the most beautiful Islamic buildings in Macedonia. In the vicinity of the Old Bazaar there are other prominent mosques, like: The Sultan Murat Mosque, the biggest mosque in Macedonia. The Gazi Isa Bey’s Mosque, the only seljuk mosque in Europe. And the Yahya Pasha Mosque which has a roof in the shape of a pyramid and the tallest minaret in Skopje. But the biggest attraction in the city is the Kale Fortress. The historic fortifications was build on the highest hill in the Skopje valley and now offer great views over the city. ------------------------------------------------- Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYTtl9EEkJaDWJgIdX40-Cg?sub_confirmation=1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Travel.Around.The.World.0/ Email: theworld.travelaround@gmail.com Intro & Outro: http://videohive.net/user/IDsains

Have you ever heard anything about Macedonia? Honestly, the only thing I knew was that it is formerly a federal unit of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. We are almost ready to land at the Skopje "Alexander the Great" Airport, and you're probably wondering why is this airport named after Alexander the Great. Macedonia naming dispute is a political dispute regarding the use of the name Macedonia itself between Greece and the Republic of Macedonia. The specific naming dispute, although an existing issue in Yugoslav–Greek relations since World War II, was reignited after the breakup of Yugoslavia. Finally we are here. Skopje "Alexander the Great" Airport is one of two international airports in the country. It serves around ten destinations, and all of them are flights to Europe, except the only one to Istanbul, Turkey. It is located 17 km southeast of the national capital Skopje. You can get to the centre within 30 minutes by shuttle buses starting from the terminal almost every hour. Basically, one day for getting around the city of Skopje is more than enough. The city is a combination of Soviet architecture and modern kitsch. They say that the country received a lot of money for the development of the tourism industry, which were put on the creation of strange buildings. Yes, they look rich, but quite tasteless and pretentious. If you ask me which city has the biggest density of monuments, I would definitely say it’s Skopje. Let’s take a walk to Macedonia Square, main square of Skopje and the biggest square in Macedonia. There’s located the biggest and the highest monument with Alexander the Great on Bucephalus, which was unveiled in 2011, on the 20-year anniversary of Macedonia's independence referendum from Yugoslavia. At 22 metres, or eight storeys high, the statue makes its surroundings look small and unimportant. While the expressed aim of multi-million Euro project was to attract international investment and tourism to Skopje its international reception gives a measure of the overall cost of this project to the city’s reputation. The Guardian, for instance, ran with How Skopje became Europe’s new capital of kitsch, while CNN asked Is Macedonia’s capital being turned into a theme park? The government’s ambition has been to create a new national identity by rewriting history like many other post-socialist cities around the Europe do. But Skopje also has some great examples of brutalist architecture – a style typified by geometric themes and raw concrete. It occurs all over the formerly communist area of Yugoslavia. In 1965 famous Japanese architect Kenzō Tange was asked by the United Nations to enter a limited competition for the redevelopment of Skopje. The town had been heavily destroyed by an earthquake in 1963. Macedonian architects also took part to the reconstruction. The reconstruction turned Skopje into a proper modernist city, with large blocks of flats, concrete buildings and scattered green spaces. One of the biggest constructions in the city centre is Gradski Trgovski Centar, partly open-air shopping mall designed by Živko Popovski. Located just by the main square it is the oldest shopping mall in Skopje. This great modernist building was on the news in December, 2014 when Macedonian citizens protested the government's plan to cover this landmark with an idiotic “baroque” facade. Now let’s get up higher to the mountains. Skopje Fortress, commonly referred to as Kale, is a historic fortress located in the old town of Skopje. It is situated on the highest point in the city overlooking the Vardar River. Scholars believe that the fortress was constructed under the orders of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. Much of information on Kale is speculative. The first academic digs began in 2006, and uncovered evidence of human activity dating back to 3000 BC. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot to see within the fortress itself; archaeologists are still slowly excavating the site. The city had begun to build a church-shaped museum inside, but this caused a violent confrontation between Muslims and Christians, so now there’s only a metal skeleton. Near the fortress you may find Old Bazaar, one of the oldest and largest marketplaces in the Balkans, it has been Skopje's centre for trade and commerce since at least the 12th century. It is the most interesting part of Skopje for visitors and tourists, offering a trip back in time and a profound experience of the Macedonian culture and tradition. But be careful about your purse and belongings.

This is Skopje, the place I call home. The city that more than 700 000 people call home. The city with plenty of sunshine in the summer and heavy fog in the winter. A city that barely sleeps. City of warmth, enjoyment and cravings for food. For fresh, delightful, tasty food. Skopje... is hungry at least 24 hours a day! But it's not only the food that matters! It's all the little rituals that make eating so special! And once you taste all those flavours, you see Skopje with different eyes. So... If you've never been to Skopje, these are the 24 hours you've been missing! genero.tv/watch-video/37842
