If you’re looking for a beautiful and underrated destination to travel to this summer, look no further than Skopje!
The capital of Macedonia is often overlooked by tourists, but it’s definitely worth a visit.
Here are 8 reasons why I think Skopje in the summertime is better than in winter:
The weather in Skopje is much nicer in the Summer:
During the summer months, the average temperature in Skopje is a pleasant 22 degrees Celsius.
However, in winter the temperature can drop as low as -4C.
If you’re looking to escape the cold weather, but not go somewhere abnormally hot (like the Mediterranean) Skopje in the summer is for you.
You can enjoy the city’s many outdoor attractions without feeling cold:
Skopje is full of outdoor attractions, from the Stone Bridge and the Kale Fortress to the Vodno Mountain and the Matka Canyon.
All of these attractions (and all the others I list here) are much more enjoyable when you don’t have to bundle up in a coat to walk around.
The city comes alive in summer:
Skopje is a super vibrant city, and this is especially true in summer.
There are often outdoor concerts and events taking place, and the streets are full of people enjoying the warm weather.
You can swim in Lake Ohrid:
One of the best reasons to visit Skopje in summer is that you can take a dip in Lake Ohrid!
The lake is one of the most beautiful in Europe, and it’s perfect for a refreshing swim on a hot day.
You can see how to go from Skopje to Ohrid here.
It’s a great time to visit the nearby mountains and lakes:
If you’re looking for a summer getaway that’s both beautiful and relaxing, Skopje is the perfect place.
The city is surrounded by stunning mountains and lakes, which are ideal for hiking, swimming, and just taking in the views.
So if you’re looking for a summer destination that’s off the beaten path, feel free to add Skopje to your list! You won’t be disappointed.
Restaurants and cafes have outdoor seating in Summer
One of the best things about summer in Skopje is that you can enjoy the weather while you eat or drink.
Many restaurants and cafes have outdoor seating, so you can soak up the sun while you enjoy some delicious Macedonian food.
Some of my favorite places for outdoor eating and drinking can be found on the Skopje promenade just around the corner from the main square.
Skopje is relatively cheap (even in Summer)
Skopje is a very affordable city, even during the summer months.
You can find cheap accommodation, food, and activities without too much difficulty.
If you’re looking for a cheap summer holiday destination, Skopje is definitely the place for you.
Accommodation and food are both very reasonably priced, making it a great option for budget travelers.
Skopje is less polluted in Summer
Another reason to visit Skopje in the summer is that the city is much less polluted.
During the winter, the air quality can be quite poor due to all the coal that is burned for heating.
However, in summer the air quality improves significantly, making it a much more pleasant place to be.
Is Skopje Worth Visiting in Winter?
Skopje is a great city to visit at any time of year.
However, if you’re looking for the best time to visit, summer is definitely the way to go.
The weather is nicer, the city comes alive, and there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy.
Not to mention, it’s a great place to escape the heat if you’re looking for a summer getaway that’s not too hot.
If you plan on visiting in Winter, be sure to bundle up! The temperature can drop as low as – degrees Celsius.
However, if you don’t mind the cold, Winter is a great time to visit Skopje too.
The city is just as beautiful in the snow (mostly in December/January) and you’ll find that many of the outdoor attractions are still open (just make sure to dress warmly).
How To Get To Skopje (In The Summer Months)
Skopje is very easy to get to, especially in the summer months.
There are direct flights from many European cities, including London, Venice, and Frankfurt.
The low-cost airline, WizzAir also flies to Skopje from a few different cities, including Malta, Budapest, and Warsaw.
You can also take a bus or train from neighboring countries like Kosovo, Montenegro, and Serbia.
If you can visit Skopje in the summertime, it’s best to do so instead of winter.
The weather is nicer, the city is more vibrant, and there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy.
